Physical Activity and the Associated Benefits

There are 101 excuses not to exercise, but physical activity is vital to good health and lower risk for cancer. For many people, getting started is the biggest obstacle to being more active. If you don't exercise, your muscles will become flabby and weak. Your heart and lungs won't function efficiently. And your joints will be stiff and easily injured. Inactivity is as much of a health risk as smoking.

Types of Workout

Take the first step. Start with walking, one of the simplest forms of exercise. It costs you nothing, and it’s easy and safe. You can choose other ways also depending on where you spend more time. If you choose to work out at home, it’s a comfortable and convenient choice. It allows your children to see you being active, which sets a good example for them. You can buy equipment or exercise videos, and the choice is yours. Plus, the investment is lower than when you have to invest in a gym or personal training programme.

Get a Workout Partner

Many of us have sedentary jobs, and work takes up a significant part of our day. We can also look for ways to increase physical activity while at work. Encourage your teammates to get out of their cubicles and away from their desks by taking a walk and having a brainstorming meeting while walking around the campus. You can even start an office sports league. If you travel a lot for work, ensure you stay at a hotel with a fitness centre or a pool. If you can’t, then at least see if you can take a walk.

You vary your workouts

Play and recreation are important for good health. Look for opportunities such as these to be active and have fun at the same time. Plan outings that require physical exertion like trekking, swimming and backpacking. Play your favourite music and dance with your family. Find a buddy who likes physical activity such as bicycling or running.

Joining a gym has its own benefits, in terms of monitored workouts, personal training and group training session. Exercise is also a key to weight control because it burns calories. If you burn off more calories than you take in, you lose weight. It's as simple as that. Being consistent with exercise, therefore, is probably the most important factor in achieving desired results.
